New Yoga Students
It's natural to feel intimidated the first time you enter a yoga studio, even at Yoga Tree. Remember everyone in the studio also had a “first class," including your instructor! One way to gain confidence is to practice at home and slowly incorporate yoga into your lifestyle. During class, one of our helpful instructors will provide adjustments or assists to help you better align your body, prevent injury, and better position your body in a specific posture. Consider positioning your mat near the middle of the room so you can see what the rest of the class is doing in addition to the instructor.

Yoga is a mind-body exercise that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. While there are many styles of yoga, in general, every style includes postures (asanas), meditation, and breathing techniques (pranayama). With regular practice, yoga builds physical strength and flexibility while reducing stress and improving the mind-body connection.
The physical dynamics of yoga, experienced through the asanas (poses) and pranayama (breath work) creates an opportunity to move through injury, trauma, tension and stress; creating a new and vital body. Building flexibility and strengthen prevent further injury and trauma; and give our systems greater immunity. Yoga soothes the central nervous system. The asanas build greater body awareness; which enables us to live embodied lives. The pranayama strengthens the lungs and respiratory tract, bringing more oxygen to the body and brain. This stabilizes the two sides of the brain and their communication; supporting emotional and psychological health and easing stress.
Meditation practice is a vital dynamic in yoga. There are as many practices as there are yogis; and each holds a treasure of where our consciousness is able to go. Meditation builds a stronger relationship to this present moment; which allows us to slow down, focus and soften in our lives.

The most important thing you need to know about a yoga class is that you are welcome. As a rule, yoga is a practice that is both inclusive and inviting, and this is certainly the case at Yoga Tree. As you enter your first class, expect classmates to say hello and expect your instructor to welcome you with open arms.
